What is Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a simple organic compound that is a naturally occurring gas found in all living things. In its pure form, it is colorless, has a strong, pungent odor, and is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC).
Why Do We Need to Protect Our Clients?
The health risks associated with formaldehyde off-gassing are well-documented by leading health organizations. The primary pathway for exposure is inhalation, and the effects can range from immediate discomfort to serious long-term health issues:
- Short-Term Effects: Exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. It can also trigger headaches, wheezing, and allergic reactions.
- Long-Term Risks: Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the US National Toxicology Program. Chronic, long-term exposure is linked to an increased risk of specific cancers, including myeloid leukemia and rare cancers of the nose and nasopharynx.

- CARB Phase 2 (California Air Resources Board): The standard previously considered the gold standard for formaldehyde emissions in North America.
- TSCA Title VI (Toxic Substances Control Act): The current US federal standard, which is aligned with CARB Phase 2 requirements.
- Japanese JIS/F** (Four-Star) Standard:** This is one of the world's most demanding standards, requiring near-zero emissions.

Rigorous Testing: Ensuring Purity in Every Panel
- Sample Placement: A sample of our panel material is placed inside a sealed, climate-controlled chamber that simulates typical indoor conditions (temperature and humidity can influence off-gassing rates).
- Air Monitoring: The air inside the chamber is carefully monitored over a specific period (usually 24 hours or more) to measure the concentration of formaldehyde released from the panel.
- Analysis and Verification: The collected air is analyzed using highly sensitive scientific equipment to determine the exact emission levels in parts per million (ppm).
How about local carpentry workshops?
In Singapore, Johor Bahry or Malaysia, it is perfectly possible to find carpenters who use E1 plywood and low toxicity glue. The problem is the glue. As long as you go for a laminated finish, carpenters will have to use glue, which will add on formaldehyde. Therefore, even with E1 plywood, you won't get clean carpentry, you won't avoid the health risks. Plus, as of 2026, E0 plywood was not available in Singapore. That is to say, some local carpenters may not be perfectly honesty about what materials they use. As long as there is no independant certification, it is hard to trust these solutions.
The main issue is therefore the laminate finish. For clean, green panels, with the machinery available locally, it is impossible to meet E0 or END standards.
